Hester Hellinga was born in the Frisian town Hallum (Netherlands). She studied Architecture at the TU Delft from 1999 to 2006, and received master degrees in both Architecture and Building Technology. 

After her study, Hellinga worked as researcher and teacher for the research group Climate Design and Sustainability. She received her PhD degree at 13 November 2013. 

Hellinga worked for consultancy and engineering office DPA Cauberg-Huygen from 2011 to 2015. In July 2015 she switched to DPA Milieu.

Hellinga supports government bodies, companies and institutions with research and innovation, consultancy projects, (European) tenders and granting of permits. Her specialisation is light, building physics, and sustainability.

As a member of Kernteam Indoor of the Nederlandse Stichting Voor Verlichtingskunde (NSVV) Hellinga contributes to the development and dissemination of knowledge about the application of light in the build environment. At the request of ISSO she works on a handbook for Energy Efficient Lighting.
